Dr Margo Diricks from the Borstel Research Centre, Leibniz Lung Centre (FZB) and a member of Leibniz INFECTIONS will deliver her inaugural lecture at the University of Lübeck on 3 November 2026, to which she invites anyone interested. This lecture marks the completion of her habilitation. We look forward to celebrating this important academic milestone with Margo Diricks.

The lecture, entitled ‘Unravelling the mysteries of non-tuberculous mycobacteria: from genomics and environmental reservoirs to clinical disease’, focuses on non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM). These bacteria are found, amongst other places, in the environment and can also cause infections in humans. The lecture will examine the topic from various perspectives – ranging from genomic analyses and environmental reservoirs to clinical diseases.

Margo Diricks holds a PhD in bioengineering and joined the “Molecular & Experimental Mycobacteriology” research group at the FZB in 2020. Her work focuses on developing genomic methods that enable the precise identification and typing of pathogens, as well as the prediction of their antibiotic resistance patterns. This approach is important both for diagnostics and for the early detection of outbreaks and the reliable tracing of chains of infection. Her research focuses on bacterial pathogens affecting the lungs, including NTM, Mycobacterium tuberculosis and bacteria of the genus Haemophilus.
